Hi. My name is Cara and I bring functional pottery items to Sea to Shore, made from stoneware clay and finished with food safe glazes.
I grew up in the villages surrounding Launceston before moving ‘up country’ for university. I returned to Launceston in 2013, with my young family in tow. My journey with clay started as a hobby which quickly become an obsession. I went back to college and had some lessons from an excellent production potter before taking the plunge and buying a kiln and a wheel and setting up a teeny studio in my home.
I love throwing on the wheel, so most of my work is made that way before being carefully hand finished. My work is very much influenced by my upbringing and surroundings in Cornwall. My ranges include ‘Mên’, meaning ‘stone’ in Cornish, made in a speckled clay with an opaque glaze over, so that the flecks show through; ‘Goon’ (meaning ‘moor’) which is a cream over a green glaze producing an ombre effect reminiscent of the mizzle hanging over the moors; and ‘Mesklen’ (meaning ‘mussel’) which is a matte, mottled glaze which looks like the surface of these little crustaceans.
‘Trelowen’ means ‘happy home’ or ‘place’ in Cornish and it is my hope that my products bring happiness into people’s homes.
